SkipM8

Be ready when the regulator asks about a load

From October 2026, every permitted waste site in England, Wales and Northern Ireland must record each receipt of waste on DEFRA's Digital Waste Tracking Service. The Environment Agency regulates sites in England; in Wales and Northern Ireland it's Natural Resources Wales and the Northern Ireland Environment Agency. What your site reports needs to be complete and on time.

SkipM8 keeps each receipt, its transfer note and the job behind it together, so you can answer a question about any load from one place instead of digging through files.

Problems are flagged on your dashboard while the load is still fresh, so you can fix them before the receipt goes to DEFRA.

Everything behind a receipt, in one place

  • Record your receiving site's permit or exemption number, checked against the format for its nation.
  • Keep your waste carrier registration and the vehicle that carried the load with the receipt.
  • See the producer, with the waste's EWC codes, weight and container.
  • Find the DEFRA waste tracking ID, the submission status and when the receipt was last sent.
  • Pull up the signed waste transfer note for the collection, kept with the booking.

Catch gaps before they hold up your reporting

If your waste carrier licence is missing, SkipM8 can't submit any receipts, and a site without its permit details can't submit its own. The dashboard and the waste movements list both warn you, and you can add the details there and then.

The dashboard also counts records needing attention, receipts that have gone more than 24 hours without being submitted, and update requests from DEFRA. Click a count to open the records behind it.

When a weight or waste breakdown is corrected, SkipM8 re-sends the receipt to DEFRA under the same tracking ID, so the record DEFRA holds matches yours.

Getting your site ready to report

  1. Add your waste carrier registration and each receiving site's permit or exemption number, which SkipM8 checks against the format for its nation.
  2. Loads arriving at your site, from your own drivers or tipped at your gate, become waste receipts with the producer, EWC codes and weight.
  3. The dashboard flags any receipt that is missing information or has gone more than 24 hours without being submitted.
  4. Each submitted receipt keeps the tracking ID DEFRA gives it, and a later correction is sent under the same ID.
  5. When a question comes up about a load, its receipt, transfer note and job are together in SkipM8.

Environment Agency questions

What can we show the Environment Agency?

SkipM8 keeps its own copy of every receipt it sends to DEFRA's Digital Waste Tracking Service, with its tracking ID, submission status and the job and transfer note behind it, so you know exactly what was reported.

How do we show what we have submitted?

Run the DEFRA submissions report for any date range. It lists each receipt with its tracking ID, status, site, producer and net weight, and exports to CSV.

Do our sites need to be set up first?

Yes. Each site that receives waste needs its permit or exemption number in SkipM8 before receipts can be submitted. Any regulatory position statements can be added too.

Can we find a transfer note quickly?

Yes. The waste transfer note register lists every note you have issued, and you can search it, download a note, print it or email it to the customer.
